Dame Vera Lynn makes international chart history by becoming the oldest living artist to have a No.1 album!
Dame Vera Lynn today in the Official UK Albums Chart, with her album entitled ‘We’ll Meet Again – The Very Best of Vera Lynn’ will achieve her debut No.1 album at the age of 92. Dame Vera will also make chart history by becoming the oldest living artist to have a No.1 album. The last ‘oldest’ artist to achieve a No.1 was Bob Dylan, aged 68 with his album release ‘Together Through Life’ released in April 2009 and before that Neil Diamond aged 67 with his album ‘Home Before Dark’ released in May 2009.
Dame Vera Lynn this week has outsold albums by artists like The Artic Monkeys, Jamie T and The Kings of Leon. She also has denied a historic return for The Beatles proving that there is nothing like a Dame!
Not only was it seventy years ago that war was declared, it is also seventy years to the month since the 22-year-old Vera visited the Decca studios and first recorded ‘We’ll Meet Again’ (28th September 1939).
This new collection, bringing together 24 of the recordings from her golden years, has enjoyed an instant and phenomenal success, showing that her wartime songs of hope and bittersweet nostalgia have well and truly stood the test of time. They have just as much relevance today as they did back then, when mankind plunged into the madness of WWII. The Vera Lynn spirit has an optimistic and heartening message for all today.
Dame Vera commented “I am extremely surprised and delighted, and a big ‘thank you’ to all my fans for putting me there”
