Following its premiere over the weekend, the Vienna Staatsoper’s production of Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra has earned top critical marks, with some of the highest praise going to Joseph Calleja who made his house role debut as Gabriele Adorno.
Kurier wrote, “The tenor makes what is often deemed a supporting character into a main role while retaining his beautiful timbre, high notes, and flawless vocal intelligence.” The Wiener–Zeitung also praised Joseph’s “inimitable golden-age tenor.”
Simon Boccanegra, which also stars Tamar Iveri as Amelia and Thomas Hampson in the title role, runs through October 4. A recording made earlier this year in Vienna, which also features Hampson and Calleja plus soprano Kristine Opolais, is now available in Europe on Decca Classics and will be released in the United States on October 29. Following the closing performance, Joseph will join Hampson and fellow costar Ferruccio Furlanetto to sign autographs at the Arcadia Opera Shop.
