On July 1, Joseph Calleja returns to Munich’s Gasteig for three concert performances of Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, reprising what the Associated Press described in 2011 as “an Edgardo of exceptional elegance” with “golden age vocalism, pure and simple.” As Donizetti’s rugged, ardent, yet ultimately star-crossed, Scottish lover, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung raved that “every melisma is a declaration of love and every chest tone conjures up the inevitability of impending tragedy” in the Maltese Tenor’s performance at the Frankfurt Opera. His account of Edgardo’s death scene can be heard on his debut CD, Tenor Arias.
Joseph is joined by fellow Lucia veteran Diana Damrau in the title role. Ludovic Tézier sings his arch-rival Enrico, and Nicolas Testé is Raimondo. Jesus Lopéz-Cobos conducts the Münchner Opernorchester and Philharmonischer Chor, with encores of the performance on July 4 and 10.
These performances of Lucia mark the beginning of a busy month for Joseph in Munich. He also marks the bicentennial of Verdi with performances of Rigoletto and the composer’s Requiem as part of the Munich Opera Festival, from July 17 to 27.
