Scientists might think 17 January is officially the grimmest day in the calendar, but that was before Israel K recorded his life-enhancing version of 'Over the Rainbow', the sunniest and most successful cover of the classic song. It's guaranteed to put a smile on even the most downcast face.
The British public have been desperate to find out who sang this simple but spellbinding version, since it recently hit our small screens (again!) on the Lynx TV ad, in which a young couple have a passionate but fleeting encounter after spotting each other in a supermarket. Through word of mouth, more and more music fans have been buying the single, pushing it back up the charts. This could not happen at a more appropriate time, the original song having been written during the depression of the 1930s; today this song serves as the perfect form of escapism from these austere times and the drudgery of every day life.
In the words of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole himself, "Remember the past but do not dwell there. Face the future where all of our hopes stand"
